Vol. 339 No. 4

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Areas.

917.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will give details of the economic data being collected in County Galway and other areas in connection with the national review of the disadvantaged areas boundaries; and when it is expected that a submission will be made to the European Commission.

939.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will give a report on the progress being made in relation to the re-classification of areas as severely handicapped in the South Galway district.

It is proposed to take Questions Nos. 917 and 939 together.

The field work associated with the current review of the disadvantaged areas boundaries entailed the collection of the following socio-economic data in the various areas under consideration: (a) size of holdings and nature of tenure (including lands let or rented and held in commonage); (b) the amount of land devoted to pasture and rough grazing and to the cultivation of forage and cash crops; (c) the numbers of the principal kinds of livestock carried; (d) the labour available; (e) an assessment of the soil characteristics, topography, drainage position and elevation.

An analysis of such data collected in respect of parts of County Galway (including South Galway), which although designated as disadvantaged have not been classified as more severely handicapped, is at present being proceeded with in my Department, in conjunction with similar data for the many other areas throughout the country also under consideration. This analysis is a prelude to an examination being carried out in due course by the Government and, eventually, by the commission of the case for further adjustments to the disadvantaged areas boundaries here.
