Vol. 339 No. 10

Written Answers. - Water Supply Pollution.

225.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he is aware of the serious pollution being caused to the domestic water supply of a family (details supplied) in County Galway who are living adjacent to the disused lead and zinc mine at Tynagh, Loughrea; and if he will take action against the company involved for their failure to compensate adequately the family involved.

It is a matter for Galway County Council as the local authority concerned to take any action that may be required under the Water Pollution Act to deal with any pollution of water resources that might be caused by conditions on the mine site. It is understood from the council that there is no evidence that such conditions have caused pollution in the domestic water supply in question. With regard to compensation, I am informed that this was the subject of recent court proceedings and it would not be appropriate for me to comment further.
