asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons committed to prisons or places of detention pending trials in courts in the State in 1981.

(Limerick East): The number of persons committed to a prison or place of detention awaiting trial in 1981 was 331. In addition 2,775 persons were committed to a prison or place of detention on remand.

This and a considerable amount of other information is available in the Annual Report on Prisons for 1981, which has been published and copies of which are in the Library.
