Vol. 340 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish UNESCO Commission.

22.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware of the recent harsh criticism of the Irish UNESCO Commission made by Mr. Seán MacBride; and if any steps are being taken to review the structure and operation of the body.

I have seen a copy of a reported interview with Mr. Seán MacBride which contains a very brief reference to the Irish National Commission for UNESCO. Where national commissions for UNESCO are established their role and functions are determined by the Government of the country concerned, with due regard to relevant considerations such as the size of the country, the nature of its administration, the financial and other resources available for the purpose. I am satisfied that Irish National Commissions have discharged in an adequate manner their obligations in accordance with their terms of reference.
