Vol. 340 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway School Extension.

25.

asked the Minister for Education if she will approve proposals by the management, teachers and parents of Williamstown national school, County Galway, for a major extension to the school; the cost of the project; and the schedule for the provision of accommodation.

My Department have approved in principle of the extension of Willamstown national school, County Galway. The Commissioners of Public Works have been requested to arrange a meeting with the chairman of the board of management to discuss the scheme.

I would like to inform the Minister that if he would——

Question Time is getting out of hand. It is a question of giving information instead of getting it.

That is also very useful.

That may be, but there will have to be some other way of dealing with the matter in accordance with Standing Orders.

Has the Minister looked at the plans for this school? If he gets an opportunity to do this, he will see that the parents and teachers in that area require a much more limited type of development than that envisaged by the Board of Works. In these hard times, will the Minister agree to the proposals by the management committee and the parents and not those of the Board of Works which are far more elaborate than the requirements of the people in the locality?

I assure the Deputy that the Commissioners of Public Works were informed of local views and the local people were asked in January 1983 to have their architect consult with the chairman regarding the planning of the extension. That is going as far as possible at this stage to take into account the local views referred to by the Deputy.

The Taj Mahal.
