Vol. 340 No. 5

Written Answers. - Shipping Movements.

303.

asked the Minister for Defence the observations made by the Defence Forces of the Soviet vessel Primorye which is reported to be stationed off the Donegal coast and which is reported to have the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation designation Malin Head AGI.

304.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will list the dates when ships of the type designated by NATO as AGI, i.e. auxiliary general intelligence, have been observed by Irish Defence Forces within 50 miles of the Irish coast since 1 January 1982.

305.

asked the Minister for Defence if he has satisfied himself that it is in the best interests of the Irish people that activities which may have an adverse effect on Irish neutrality should be hidden from the general public by a refusal by the military authorities to answer press queries on foreign military activity close to Ireland.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 303, 304 and 305 together.

It is not the practice to disclose information of a security nature which may be available to the Defence Forces in regard to shipping movements in waters around Ireland. I am satisfied that this practice, which is of long standing, is correct.
