Vol. 340 No. 5

Written Answers. - NATO Exercises.

312.

asked the Minister for Transport if details of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation war rehearsal code named Northern Wedding 82, which took place in the eastern Atlantic, the Celtic Sea and the Irish Sea, which were made available by the participants to the Department of Foreign Affairs were communicated to the press and RTE so that Irish shipping and fishing vessels would be made aware of possible hazards caused by surface warships, sub-marines and aircraft from Britain, the United States and the Netherlands which took part in that exercise.

Details relating to the use of air space to the west of Ireland in connection with the exercise in question, which were necessary for the safe and orderly flow of air traffic, were promulgated by my Department by means of an aviation notice.

Activities involving surface warships or submarines relating to exercises conducted by other administrations on the high seas are not the subject of marine notices issued by my Department.
