Vol. 340 No. 8

Written Answers. - Ground Rents.

382.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider increasing the time allowed under Part III of the Landlord and Tenant (Ground Rents) (No. 2) Act, 1978 which is due to expire this year.

Limerick East): I recently issued a statement drawing public attention to the termination of the purchase scheme provided for in the 1978 Act on 31 July next with a view to encouraging any lessees who may wish to avail themselves of the scheme to do so in good time.

As the statement received little or no publicity I now have under consideration other means of drawing public attention to the situation.

The Deputy will appreciate that in these circumstances it would not be helpful for me to make any comment at the moment about the possibility of legislation being introduced to allow for some extension of the scheme. I should like to urge all ground rent lessees who wish to buy out their ground rents to set matters in motion while the scheme as provided for in the 1978 Act — with its nominal fees — is in operation.
