Vol. 340 No. 9

Written Answers. - Budget Charges on Civil Service Candidates.

63.

asked the Minister for the Public Service if and when he will announce the charges being imposed by the budget on candidates applying for employment in the civil service.

Charges at the rate of £7 or £10, depending on the level of the post concerned, were introduced with effect from 1 March 1983 and were announced in the weekly press advertisements published by the Civil Service Commissioners. Because of the steadily rising number of applications at public service competitions and of the growing costs of processing these candidatures, the Government decided to reintroduce application fees in order to recover at least a proportion of the costs involved. Having regard to the fall in the value of money, the fees will, in effect, be much lower, proportionately, than when previously applicable.
