Vol. 340 No. 10

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo-Leitrim Industrial Development.

21.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the plans the IDA have for the creation of new jobs in Counties Sligo and Leitrim; the number and location of any vacant factories in both counties; and the prospects of new industries for each vacant factory.

In its Industrial Plan 1978-1982 the Industrial Development Authority set a target for the creation of 1,900 jobs in County Sligo and 1,100 in County Leitrim. During that period the IDA succeeded in creating 948 first time jobs in County Sligo or 50 per cent of target and 509 jobs in County Leitrim or 46 per cent of target.

I would add that a number of jobs have yet to come on stream from projects approved in recent years.

I propose to circulate details of the IDA's vacant factory space and land holdings in these counties in the form of a tabular statement.

Following is the statement:

I accept that most of the information would be contained in the tabular statement. Is the Minister giving any definite information on prospects for any vacant factories in either Sligo or Leitrim?

I would prefer the Deputy to put down particular questions about the individual factories. There is a very large number of factories in Sligo in a variety of centres. There is also a substantial land bank in a variety of locations in Sligo and Leitrim. I would prefer to answer the Deputy's question by reference to particular sites. Perhaps when he has seen the tabular statement he will put down a series of questions for written or oral reply.

I accept what the Minister says, but the last part of my question refers to the prospects for new industries for each vacant factory. Does the tabular statement include a reply to that part of the question?

I am sorry to say the tabular statement does not set out that information. I regret to say that, in terms of individual prospects. If it is acceptable to the Deputy, I will supply him with the information and, if he wants to put down a parliamentary question to get it on the record of the House, that can be done.

I thank the Minister for that. I hope he will give a fairly detailed reply in relation to the prospects.

In so far as I can, but the negotiations may be at the point where it may not be possible to disclose details.
