Vol. 340 No. 12

Written Answers - Social Welfare Benefits.

291.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason unemployment assistance was not paid to a person (details supplied) in County Dublin even though he is available for work.

The person mentioned by the Deputy in his question is currently in receipt of weekly unemployment benefit and pay-related benefit. It is presumed therefore that the question relates to his wife.

His wife would not be eligible to claim unemployment assistance as she is a dependant of her husband. She did, however, claim unemployment benefit on 8 March 1982 but her claim was disallowed on the grounds that she was not available for work.

She appealed against the disallowance and an oral hearing of her case was held on 28 April 1982. The Appeals Officer, however, upheld the disallowance. She last signed as unemployed on 12 May 1982 and has not been in touch with her local office since that date. If she considers that she now fulfils the requirements of being available for work it is open to her to reapply for unemployment benefit at her local office.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason for the delay in paying unemployment benefit to a person (details supplied) in County Cork.

The person concerned is not qualified for unemployment benefit as according to the Department's records he has no weeks of insurable employment or credited contributions during the governing contribution period from 6 April 1980 to 5 April 1981.

He has been asked on numerous occasions to furnish a form P.60 or a statement from his employer providing details of his employment but to-date he has not done so. When he does furnish the required information his outstanding contribution record will be investigated and his entitlement to unemployment benefit will be determined.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason unemployment benefit has not been paid to a person (details supplied) in County Cork; and when payment will be made.

The person concerned became ill and incapable of work while in receipt of unemployment benefit. He transferred to disability benefit from 12 January 1983 but resumed claiming unemployment benefit from 27 January 1983.

Inquiries were undertaken to ascertain whether he was capable of work as he did not furnish a final medical certificate when claiming disability benefit. However he recently submitted a medical statement showing that he was fit to resume work on 25 January 1983 and his claim to unemployment benefit has been allowed from that date.

Arrangements have been made to pay all arrears due to him this week. Further weekly payments of £39.17 representing the maximum flat-rate unemployment benefit of £31.65 and pay-related benefit £7.52 will be made as they become due.

302.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason unemployment benefit is not being paid to a person (details supplied) in County Tipperary.

The person concerned exhausted her title to unemployment benefit when she received 312 days of benefit on 1 January 1983. She cannot qualify for further payments of unemployment benefit until she resumes work and obtains at least 13 weeks of insurable employment for which the appropriate contributions have been paid.
