Written Answers . - Health Contributions .

217.

asked the Minister for Health (a) the number of self-employed and farmers who are liable for the payment of a health contribution; (b) the number from whom payments have been received; (c) the number from whom payments were outstanding at 31 December 1982; (d) the total amount received in payments during 1982; and (e) the total amount outstanding at 31 December 1982.

: The reply is in the form of a tabular statement. Following is the statement:

Health Contributions

Self-Employed

Farmers

(a) Number of persons assessed as currently liable

103,000

104,000

(b) Number of persons from whom payments were received in 1982

48,000

72,184

(c) Number of persons from whom payments were outstand- ing at 31 December 1982

60,463

90,005

(d) Amounts received in 1982

£1,619,755

£3,139,951

(e) Total amount outstanding at 31 December 1982

£7,957,850

£8,395,000

Note (i) The entries under (c) include persons who have made part payments.

(ii) The entries at (b) and (d) in relation to the self-employed are lower than usual and reflect the fact that it was not practicable to issue 1982 demand notes until February 1983.

(iii) The entries at (e) relate to the period since the introduction of health contributions i.e. 1/10/1971 to 31/12/1982. It is expected that the amount in relation to the self-employed will be considerably reduced according as income assessments for income tax and health contributions purposes are finalised by the Revenue Commissioners.
