Vol. 341 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions . Oral Answers . - Kiln Drying Timber Facilities .

23.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry the facilities available for kiln drying timber in the State; where they are located; and the capacity of each.

: Records containing the precise information requested are not compiled by my Department. However, following inquiries made in the industry and elsewhere, I understand that in all 19 firms have kiln drying facilities, the aggregate capacity of which is in the region of 1,440 cubic metres. Further details are contained in a tabular statement which I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

: Does the Minister accept that this is totally inadequate for the needs of the timber industry for the purpose of supplying the construction industry? Has he any plans for the establishment of kiln drying facilities to ensure that the timber which is available can be dried to a suitable standard for the construction industry?

: I should point out to the Deputy that all timber sawn in Irish mills is not dried in this manner, that proportion only which is necessary to meet specifications as to moisture content for housebuilding, specialised fencing and so on is subjected to kiln drying. It constitutes an additional cost factor which generally is avoided unless absolutely necessary. Therefore, I should point out that it would be wrong of us to take on this extra cost and, by so doing, become less competitive.

: Does the Minister accept that the capacity available is totally inadequate for supplying the timber required?

: I am not convinced that that is so.
