Vol. 341 No. 7

Written Answers . - Mayo Piers .

608.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if the wishes of fishermen have been met in respect of the alterations in width and design of the pier at Kilcummin, Ballina, County Mayo.

: Proposals by the fishermen for alterations to the width and the design of the pier at Kilcummin have been approved and are being incorporated in the scheme which is in progress.

609.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry whether the wishes of fishermen in respect of changes to works at Killala pier, County Mayo, have been agreed to by his Department.

: Work is in progress on a scheme to consolidate the pier at Killala by sheetpiling. In addition the pier is being resurfaced and lights and ladders are being provided. The fishermen who are seeking a dredging scheme have intimated that they would prefer such a scheme to the work being undertaken at present. According to the technical advice available to me the sheetpiling is necessary to protect the pier structure by preventing undercutting and subsidence. The question of dredging the approach channel has been considered in the past but it was decided, on technical advice, not to proceed with it. I am, however, having the matter re-examined.

A proposal to dredge an area adjacent to the co-op premises to facilitate the smaller boats is also being examined.
