Vol. 343 No. 2

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take Nos. 11 and 12. Private Members' Business from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. will be No. 37.

In view of the continued closure of Dublin docks in the five weeks' old dock dispute, because a serious situation is arising in connection with supplies of various commodities, would the Taoiseach immediately arrange ministerial intervention because of the most recent breakdown in talks?

A discussion of this would not be in order but if the Taoiseach wishes to give a short answer, he is at liberty to do so.

The position is delicate at present. There are contacts and there is a possibility of a resumption of discussions. It would be better if we left the matter at that for today, in the hope that something will come of the contacts being made.

The Taoiseach when on this side of the House always got from me the necessary co-operation in delicate situations of this nature. However, his Government seem completely inept at handling industrial relations.

We cannot have this sort of discussion on this topic.

Is the Chair saying that anyone from these benches cannot offer one word of criticism to the Government?

No. Not in this way at this time. I permitted the Deputy to ask a question and the Taoiseach to answer. It should be left at that.

I would be happy to have a word with the Deputy afterwards to explain the present position, if that would be of any help.

And get his advice.

I thank the Taoiseach. However, the officer will not be necessary provided the Taoiseach ensures that his Ministers are doing the job they were elected to do.

Could I ask the Taoiseach when it is proposed to take Item No. 8 on today's Order paper? It is in connection with the establishment of a Joint Committee on State-Sponsored Bodies.

Three weeks ago I asked the Taoiseach if he would give the latest position on the rents tribunal legislation. He said that in a few weeks he would report back to the House. Could he now give the House the up-to-date position?

The Bill is with the draftsmen at the present time. It will come before the House very shortly.

Could I raise on the Adjournment this evening the question of picketing within the prescribed vicinity of Leinster House while the Dáil is in session?

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.

Could I raise a matter on the Adjournment concerning Spanish crewmen working on registered vessels operating in Irish territorial waters? These are threatening to wipe out our entire fishing industry.

The Chair will communicate with Deputy Walsh.

I want to raise on the Adjournment the question of allegations of a black list operating in the Department of Justice.

The Deputy should talk to his brother.
