Vol. 343 No. 2

Written Answers. - Inisturk (Mayo) Electricity Supply.

573.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy when it is proposed to provide electricity for the residents of Inisturk Island, County Mayo.

In accordance with Government decisions of 1979 and 1980, the ESB offered the householders on Inisturk island a supply of electricity with individual generators in each house. The islanders rejected this idea and said that they wanted a central supply.

I am informed that the average cost per house of supplying electricity to the islanders from a central generator would be approximately 13 times the cost of providing individual generators to each house. Because of these cost considerations the ESB, in a letter dated 19 February 1982, informed the islanders that supply could be made available from individual generators only. I understand that the ESB have received no further communication from the islanders since February 1982.
