Vol. 343 No. 4

Written Answers. - State Forest Lands Use.

617.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if it is his policy to charge fees or levies to persons who have been using State forest lands for pony trekking by tourists; when this policy was decided; if he will review it in the light of obvious damage to local tourist interests and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It has been the Department's traditional policy to charge fees to commercial riding stables and members of the public for pony trekking facilities on State forest lands. Such facilities are granted under permit or licence subject to certain conditions aimed at eliminating potential danger to the public in their enjoyment of forest walks and avoiding damage to State property. Despite a recent increase I am satisfied that the fees are not unreasonable by present day standards and are not adversely affecting tourism interests.
