There are 11 kiosks which have been erected and which will be brought into service in Galway city and county this year. These are located at: 1. Castlelawn, Galway city; 2. I am aware that telephone service in the Leenane area is less than satisfactory. This is because the area is served from Clifden by 21 miles of overhead cable over mountainous and boggy terrain. The line has been subject to damage by storms, lightning etc. In addition the ESB supply in the area is subject to occasional failure.
It is intended to renew about 11 miles of that part of the line most prone to damage. Work on this will begin about the end of this year and, when completed, should ensure a satisfactory service. In the meantime some improvement can be expected within the next month when a new radio link between Galway and Clifden is opened.
