RTE applied for permission on 28 February 1978. Following examination of the application, which was part of a package of proposed radio developments, approval for the new Radio 2 service was granted by the Government on 6 October 1978. Various alternative possibilities as well as RTE's proposals had to be considered and the examination necessarily took time.
