Vol. 344 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pharmaceutical Industry.

411.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he is concerned that Ireland is one of the fastest growing locations for the drugs industry; if new legislation is planned by the Government in this field as our present legislation in the toxicology/ environmental protection area is very weak; and if so, when will it be introduced.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the pharmaceutical industry.

My objective is to promote industrial development and employment and the pharmaceutical industry is one that offers substantial prospects in this respect. Obviously, the development of industry must take account of the need to avoid significant levels of pollution. To this end every new industry or expansion must conform to stringent environmental controls laid down by the responsible authorities. I am not aware that there is any evidence of major deficiencies in this area. However, if the Deputy has any specific recommendations as to improvements that could be effected, I would be happy to pass them on to the responsible Ministers. As she will appreciate, I do not have the primary responsibility for legislation in the toxicology/ environmental protection area.
