Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Constituency Revisions.

219.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will ensure as far as possible that county boundaries will not be breached in any future constituency revisions.

In accordance with the Constitution, the responsibility of revising the constituencies rests with the Oireachtas. The Oireachtas in revising constituencies must have regard to the constitutional requirements and to the interpretation of these requirements by the courts. It will be appreciated, therefore, that I am not in a position to indicate to what extent it may be possible to avoid breaching of county boundaries in any future revision. An Electoral Commission was set up last April to advise and report on the formation of Dáil constituencies.
