Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Waterford City Bridge.

220.

asked the Minister for the Environment the present situation concerning the proposed high level bridge for Waterford city; if he proposes to provide funds for this proposal; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

In January 1979 the then Minister for the Environment decided that the structural condition of the existing Redmond bridge was such that its replacement had to take priority over all other road and bridge proposals for Waterford city. This work is now in progress and allied to it are major road improvement at Ferrybank and Dock Road. The costs of these projects, estimated at £15 million, are being met by full cost road grants from my Department. In the circumstances, consideration of the application for the bridge order relating to the high level bridge is being deferred pending completion of the projects and an assessment in due course of their effect on traffic and on the environment.
