Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Car Security.

263.

asked the Minister for the Environment in view of the continued increase in the number of car thefts, if he proposes to make any aproaches to the motor car industry in relation to car security; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Regulations under the Road Traffic Act, 1961, provide that vehicles be fitted with door, ignition or immobility locks or devices. These are standard devices intended to protect cars from theft. The question of making this requirement more effective against car thieves is being considered by appropriate international organisations, but manufacturers generally have not as yet come up with satisfactory solutions to the problems involved. I am keeping in touch with developments.
