Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Bessbrook Railway Station.

307.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will press the Northern Ireland authorities to provide a railway station at Bessbrook on the Dublin-Belfast line to serve Newry, County Down, especially since it is now used as an unscheduled stop to convey passengers by bus to Dundalk.

At my Department's request, the Department of Transport raised with the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland the question of reopening the railway halt at Bessbrook. The Northern Ireland authorities, who have responsibility in this area, have informed us that none of the options available could be justified in terms of the costs involved related to benefits.
