Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Border Road Closure.

324.

Mr. Leonard

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will contact the British authorities with a view to having the Border road at Lackey Bridge, Clones, County Monaghan, opened to traffic.

The decision to close the Border crossing at the Lackey Bridge was taken by the British authorities on the basis of the Security considerations as they saw them and the road can only be reopened with their agreement. My Department have raised the question of the reopening of the Lackey Bridge with the British authorities on a number of occasions.

I am fully aware of the difficulties caused to local residents in Border areas as a result of road closures. While the decision whether or not to reopen such roads is a matter for the British authorities, I will keep the matter under constant review and will impress upon them the need to have the roads reopened as soon as the security situation allows.
