Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Coolock (Dublin) Vacant Factory.

364.

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy the steps that have been taken to date to find industrial tenants for the vacant factory space on Greencastle Road, Dublin, formerly occupied by a company (details supplied) in view of the very high rate of unemployment in the area; if he will request the IDA to encourage tenants to employ local labour in so far as is practicable; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed that the Industrial Development Authority will continue to promote the factory at Greencastle Road, formerly occupied by Data Products, in conjunction with 12 acres of land and 276,600 sq. ft. of factory space available for industrial development in Coolock/Santry area.

In recent years the IDA have secured a number of major projects for the area such as Specialty Materials, Applied Magnetics, Prime Computers and the recently announced Gould SEL which between them employ 557 people at present.

While the IDA would encourage any company which might set up in the factory to use local labour, a final decision on recruitment is a matter solely for the particular company concerned.
