Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Youth Employment Levy.

387.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will state how much was obtained from the youth employment levy in respect of each year of operation; and if he will give a detailed breakdown of how and by what bodies and in what amounts that money was spent.

The Youth employment levy was introduced in April 1982. Sums paid to my Department up to end of 1982 amounted to £38,154,000.

In accordance with the Youth Employment Agency Act, 1981, the activities of the Youth Employment Agency and other activities in the area of youth employment, training and work experience are funded by the levy. During 1982 payments were made to various bodies in respect of such activities as follows:

£

AnCO

19,300,000

CERT Ltd.

980,000

Youth Employment Agency

3,755,000

Department of the Environment:

Environmental Improvements Scheme

4,000,000

Department of Education:

Grant Scheme for Youth Employment

2,300,000

Department of Labour:

—Grant Scheme for Youth Employment (transferred from Department of Education)

—Work Experience Programme

5,048,620

—Employment Incentive Scheme (youth element)

Total

35,383,620

It is estimated that in 1983 £75 million will be paid to my Department under this heading. A high proportion of this figure had been allocated but as final allocations have not yet been made it is not possible to give a detailed breakdown as requested by the Deputy.
