Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

470.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of outstanding telephone applications in the Dún Laoghaire constituency area County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information sought is not readily available.

Dún Laoghaire constituency is served by the telephone exchanges at Dún Laoghaire, Rochestown, Shankill, Foxrock and Priory Park and it may assist the Deputy to know that there are some 3,500 outstanding applications for telephone service at those exchanges. However, some of the applications would be from outside the Dún Laoghaire constituency.

It is planned to meet up to 35,000 applications for telephone service in the 01 area in the current year and to clear the waiting list for telephones by the end of 1984.

471.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs is he aware of the urgent need for the installation of telephones at Mount Albany off Newtownpark Avenue, Blackrock, County Dublin; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Yes.

Cabling work necessary to enable telephone service to be provided for applicants in Mount Albany, Newtown-park Avenue, Blackrock is expected to be completed within the next month or so.

Service will be provided for applicants in the estate as soon as possible after that.

472.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the public telephone kiosk at Grange Park Avenue, Raheny, Dublin 5 will be removed.

It is planned to remove the kiosk at Grange Park Avenue. The kiosk will be removed as soon as the volume of engineering work in the area allows.

473.

Mr. Leonard

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs in view of the increased cost of financing rural telephone kiosks under the guarantee scheme by local authorities if he will discontinue the demand for guarantee after five years has elapsed from the provision of kiosk; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

If the demand for guarantee was discontinued after five years it could result in a substantial subsidy by the Department to these kiosks. However due recognition is given of improving revenue and the demand for payment under the guarantee scheme reduces as revenue improves. Ultimately it is discontinued when the revenue reaches the guarantee figure.

Accordingly it is not proposed to discontinue the demand for payment after the initial five-year period has elapsed.

474.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service out of order since February 1983 will be required for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7.

The fault which is recorded as having been reported on 11 May, has since been repaired.

475.

Mr. Leonard

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he has noted the contents of the investment file survey regarding the telephone system; and if so, the action he proposes to take.

I have seen the report of the survey referred to. It purports to give the results of a survey carried out among 247 foreign companies in business here, all of them from countries in which the telephone system is highly developed. I can understand that, depending on their location in this country, numbers of them would find the telephone system here less satisfactory than in their parent countries. The object of the current telephone development programme is to bring the quality of the telephone service here up to the level in other EEC countries. Much has already been achieved and it is expected that the programme will be completed on target by the end of next year.

476.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if a telephone service will be repaired for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 as she lives alone and has been without service for a number of weeks.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5 who has paid installation costs since February 1983.

Service has been provided for the person named.

478.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason a person (details supplied) in County Laois has been notified that her telephone is to be cut off due to non-payment of rental; if he is aware that her application for free rental was approved by the Department of Social Welfare in December 1982; and if he will now arrange for a refund of all rental paid from that date.

The final notice threatening disconnection of service was in respect of money due for call charges. It did not include any rental.

479.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is expected that service will be provided for the person named within about a year.

480.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when the digital exchange in Patrick Street, Drogheda, County Louth will be brought into operation.

In the fourth quarter of this year.

481.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if a telephone service will be restored to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 5; and when this work will be carried out.

Service will be provided for the person named as soon as possible but it is unlikely that the necessary engineering work will be completed before the end of this year.
