Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Facilities for Mentally Handicapped.

529.

Mr. Leonard

asked the Minister for Health the action he proposes to take to ensure that there is a reasonably adequate provision for young mentally handicapped people in each health board area.

The framework for current policy for the mentally handicapped is set out in the Report of the Working Party on Services for the Mentally Handicapped, 1980. In general, I feel that services for young mentally handicapped children appear to be reasonably adequate in most health board areas. There are gaps, however, in the levels of provision in some areas, and there are a number of proposals before my Department at present for the development of those areas.
