Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Garda Vehicles.

56.

asked the Minister for Justice how many Garda vehicles in the Dublin City and County areas have been stolen; how many have been destroyed or damaged; if he will give a breakdown of how they were destroyed or damaged; and the cost of replacing or repairing these vehicles.

Limerick East): The latest figures available relate to the year 1982. In that year in the Dublin city and county areas, two Garda vehicles were the subject of unauthorised taking, although none was stolen in the legal sense. 429 vehicles, including one of the two taken, were destroyed or damaged. Of these 429 vehicles, 311 were destroyed or damaged as a result of traffic accidents, and 118 as a result of malicious damage, including 57 arising from ramming incidents.

The cost of repairing or replacing 427 of the vehicles, including 117 cases of malicious damage, amounted to £186,000 approximately. The cost of repairing or replacing the remaining two has not yet been finalised.
