Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dundalk Jail.

64.

asked the Minister for Justice if the Office of Public Works has examined the old Dundalk Jail, County Louth, recently; if there is any possibility of reopening it; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): The premises have been examined in the light of suggestions that they could be used as a prison. The conclusion was that, by reason of the very dilapidated state of much of the premises, the lack of provision for the supply of services now considered essential in a prison and the fact that the sounder portions are currently serving as a Garda District Headquarters and county council stores, it would not be practicable to attempt to adapt them for use as a prison.
