Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Free Legal Aid Scheme.

70.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will comment on the statement made by a District Court Justice (details supplied) that some solicitors were abusing the free legal aid scheme.

Limerick East): In so far as the statement, as reported in the media, was concerned with the conduct of a case by a solicitor in court, it would not be appropriate for me to make any comment. Under the Solicitors' Acts, 1954-1960, all disciplinary powers in relation to solicitors are vested in the Incorporated Law Society and the High Court.

In so far as the reported statement raises a general question as to the circumstances in which accused persons are granted legal aid, I am having the position examined to see what changes may be needed in the present arrangements for providing legal aid under the Criminal Justice (Legal Aid) Act, 1962 and the regulations under it.
