Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - National Teacher Training.

102.

asked the Minister for Education if a one-year national teacher diploma course will be conducted in St. Patrick's Training College, Dublin for 1983-1984.

103.

asked the Minister for Education the reason the one-year post-graduate course for national teacher training has been cancelled this year; whether she is aware of the severe disappointment this has caused to many students who pursued particular courses at university with a view to applying for that course; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 102 and 103 together.

It became necessary to suspend the one-year primary teacher training course for university graduates in 1983 in order to secure a reasonable balance between the output of qualified national teachers from the colleges of education and the number of vacancies for teaching posts in national schools which are likely to arise.
