Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Regional Technical Colleges.

105.

asked the Minister for Education the number of regional technical colleges that have student representation on their boards of management.

106.

asked the Minister for Education her attitude to a request from Westmeath VEC to amend section 21, paragraph 40, of the Vocational Education Act, 1930 to provide for more than 12 members on the boards of management of regional technical colleges with the stated idea of allowing those boards which do not have student representation to have such representation on their boards; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 105 and 106 together.

Two regional technical colleges have at present a student representative on their boards of management.

My Department have been in communication with the Irish Vocational Education Association in regard to the general question of student representation in the context of the present membership arrangements for the representation of a spectrum of interests on the boards of management of the regional technical colleges.

I propose to have the matter further reviewed with due regard to the terms of the resolution from Westmeath VEC discussed at the meeting of IVEC on 15 and 16 March 1983.
