There is no statistical information available to my Department which would serve as a reliable basis for a calculation of the number of persons referred to in the question from the Deputy.
The existing formal arrangements for monitoring the levels of academic attainment of school leavers are by means of the group, intermediate and leaving certificate examinations. The Curriculum and Examinations Board which I propose to establish will concern itself with the question of the improvements which may be effected in these arrangements.
