Vol. 344 No. 9

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher.

139.

asked the Minister for Education why a remedial teacher was appointed to a 400-pupil school in the Dublin South area, while a remedial teacher was refused for St. Colmcille's junior and senior schools, Knocklyon, Templeogue, County Dublin which have 1,000 children on the rolls; and if she will review the decision not to grant sanction for a remedial teacher at St. Colmcille's.

Applications for the appointment of remedial teachers are generally in excess of the number of such appointments which can be made in any one year. The applications are placed on a priority list in accordance with a number of factors related to the needs of the children and the circumstances of the schools applying. Priority is not established merely on the basis of a comparison of the size of the schools in question.

The quota of remedial posts for the 1982-83 school year has been allocated and St. Colmcille's was not sufficiently high on the priority list to merit an allocation in that year in comparison with other schools in respect of which applications were received.
