Vol. 345 No. 1

Written Answers. - County Dublin Educational Facilities.

497.

asked the Minister for Education the progress made in respect of plans for the provision of a convent school for Swords, County Dublin; and when she expects the school will open.

The position in relation to the proposed new secondary school for girls in Swords is that my Department now await developed design proposals from the school authorities.

At this stage of the project it is not possible to indicate when the school may open. The Deputy may be assured, however, that there will be no avoidable delay on my Department's part in dealing with the matter.

498.

asked the Minister for Education if she will immediately sanction an additional teacher and the necessary classroom for Corduff national school, Lusk, County Dublin.

As the average enrolment requirements for such appointment at Corduff national school, Lusk, County Dublin are not fulfilled, it is not possible to sanction the appointment at present.

The question of providing temporary accommodation to meet the needs of the school in the short term is at present being considered in my Department. The Commissioners of Public Works have been asked to state whether it would be possible to place a prefabricated classroom on the site of the school. Their report is awaited.

499.

asked the Minister for Education (a) if she is aware of the urgent need for a second post-primary school in Portmarnock, County Dublin; (b) her plans to meet this need; and (c) if she will meet a deputation from the Portmarnock Community Association to discuss the matter.

Future post-primary school provision for Portmarnock, County Dublin, is at present under consideration in my Department in the context of the extent and duration of the forthcoming increase in pupil numbers in Portmarnock and the availability of places in existing post-primary schools within a reasonable distance. My Department have been in communication with local interested parties on this matter and will communicate further with them as the need arises.
