Vol. 345 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nominations for Presidency.

2.

asked the Taoiseach if, in any review of the Constitution, the Government will consider the present constitutional provisions for nominating candidates for the Presidency with a view to possible amendments to allow for nominations by a wider range of groups and individuals; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government have no proposals to amend Article 12.4 of the Constitution, although in any review of the Constitution, questions of this kind could, of course, arise.

Does the Taoiseach consider the present provision in the Constitution to be restrictive in regard to the election to the Presidency? Since the nominations are closing this week and it is a matter of very great public concern, would he indicate if the Government and the Taoiseach consider that wider powers of selection of candidates for the Presidency should be given in the interest of democracy and the public demand which exists at the moment for such wider selection?

Neither I nor the Government have given any consideration to the question.
