Vol. 345 No. 1

Written Answers. - Imported Cement Quality.

259.

Mr. Leonard

asked the Minister for Industry and Energy if he is satisfied with the quality of imported cement.

Over the past year, the quality of imported cement has given rise to some concern on the part of the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards which has statutory responsibility for industrial standards and product quality. The IIRS have recently introduced a certification scheme for cement, and purchasers of cement certified by the Institute to Irish Standard 1:1963 may be assured of the quality of the material.

The scheme is open to both Irish and foreign cement manufacturers and a licence has already been granted to an Irish manufacturer who supplies cement in accordance with the "Irish Standard Mark", thereby guaranteeing its quality.
