Vol. 345 No. 8

Written Answers - Tallaght (Dublin) Garda Station.

377.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that the Garda station in Tallaght, County Dublin, is inadequate in view of the number posted there; whether he is aware that there are no facilities for ban-ghardaí in the station; and whether he will consider as a matter of urgency the renting of suitable accommodation locally until the erection of a permanent station as part of the new Tallaght town centre.

Limerick East): In order to improve the Garda service for the population of the Tallaght area it has been the policy to assign extra gardaí to the area and it is accepted that the existing station there is no longer adequate to accommodate the number of gardaí now assigned to it. Due to a lack of appropriate facilities, no ban-ghardaí are at present assigned to the station.

It is proposed to replace the existing station by a new one to be erected within the precincts of the new town centre planned for Tallaght. The necessary site has been secured and the plans for the new station are in the course of preparation. The station will provide high quality accommodation for the gardaí assigned there and facilities for banghardaí will be included. It is hoped that the new station will be ready for occupation in approximately two years.

In the circumstances, it is considered that, even if suitable temporary accommodation were available, the cost of securing and adapting it would not be justified, having regard to the comparatively short time for which it would be required. Some alleviation of the present difficulties has been made possible by the provision of portacabin accommodation.
