Vol. 346 No. 6

Written Answers. - Telephone Service.

408.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that a person (details supplied) in Dublin 11 is unhappy with the amount demanded for local calls in respect of the April-June billing period; if he accepts that the bill is in respect of 50 per cent to 60 per cent more calls than is the norm for her, that errors in respect of the account have been acknowledged in the past and that appropriate credits were made to her; and if he will now take steps to rectify this situation.

Bills issued by my Department for telephones connected to automatic exchanges do not contain details of local calls. They show the number of metered units in respect of local and dialled trunk calls.

The account referred to by the Deputy has been rechecked and found to be correct.

The number of metered units in the account in question represent an increase of 160 units on the previous quarter. A relatively small number of long distance calls could account for this.

A rebate in respect of metered calls in the July-September 1980 billing period was given to this subscriber. At that time accounts work was heavily in arrears and detailed records were not available following the two prolonged strikes in 1978 and 1979. In these circumstances it was decided in this and a number of other cases to afford subscribers the benefit of the doubt. This circumstance no longer obtains.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be provided for applicants in the River Valley-Rathingle area, Swords, County Dublin.

It is expected that telephone service will be provided for applicants in the River Valley-Rathingle area during the first half of next year.

It had been expected that service would be provided earlier. Unfortunately it was not possible to do so because of the need to divert staff to other urgent work, including maintenance.

I am sorry for the delay in providing telephones. However, the vast bulk of applications will be met on demand by the end of next year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when a telephone service will be transferred for a person (details supplied) in County Dublin.

It has not been possible in the time available to trace an application on behalf of the person named. If the Deputy can furnish additional information, e.g. when and where the application was made, further efforts will be made to trace it.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the reason for the difficulty in obtaining a site for a telephone kiosk at Coolacre, Lifford, County Donegal, as the county council are prepared to give land for the kiosk.

An alternative site for the proposed kiosk at Coolatee had to be selected as the original site was too close to an overhead electricity cable. Local authority approval to the alternative site has been obtained.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when he will proceed with the erection of a telephone kiosk at Killeen, Gort, County Galway, which was sanctioned by his Department more than two years ago; and if he is aware of the urgency of having a kiosk provided at this location because of its distance from the nearest telephone.

Killeen is not included in this year's programme. The claims of this area in relation to others for which kiosks have also to be approved will be considered when the 1984 programme is being drawn up.
