Vol. 347 No. 1

Written Answers. - Mayo Industry.

212.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he has any proposals to assist a factory (details supplied) in County Mayo so that they can increase their work force.

I understand that in October 1983 the Industrial Development Authority approved grant assistance to the company in question to restructure its operations and this has helped to reduce the number of planned redundancies. The company is currently restructuring its activities; the IDA will continue to work closely with it and will encourage further development.

213.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if the IDA have plans to provide further industry in Westport, County Mayo to relieve the serious unemployment position there.

I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that during 1983, they assisted the Westport Shoe Co-Op to establish in the former Dubarry shoe factory. This company is at present recruiting staff. Lastra Foundations was also approved grant assistance for an expansion which has already provided additional jobs.

The IDA are actively promoting their 21,800 square feet advance factory, 36 acres of land and remaining small industry units in Westport for suitable industrial development.

214.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the grants and other assistance made available to a factory (details supplied) in County Mayo; and if the IDA have any plans to provide further assistance so that employment may be increased there.

I understand that the Industrial Development Authority have provided grant assistance to the promoters to enable them to start operations. However, I am not in a position at this stage to give details of this financial assistance which, in accordance with normal practice, is confidential until its publication later in the IDA's annual report for 1983.

I understand that the IDA's west regional office is in regular contact with the promoters for the purpose of reviewing progress.
