Vol. 347 No. 1

Written Answers. - Company Returns.

216.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the proportion and number of companies registered in the Companies Registration Office which have not filed up-to-date returns; and the proportion and number of companies that have not made returns for more than four years.

217.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism the steps being taken to end the delays in companies filing returns with the Companies Registration Office; when it is expected that the computerisation of files will begin; when it is anticipated that this process will be completed; and when it is likely that most files will contain up-to-date information.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 216 and 217 together.

On the basis of the most recent survey carried out in this area, it is estimated that 61,000 companies (78 per cent of the total) have not filed up-to-date returns and that 20,000 (26 per cent of the total) are more than four years in default.

The major element of the measures which are being taken to improve the operation of the Companies Registration Office is the installation of a computer-based system. Tenders for the supply of the necessary equipment are being examined and it is hoped to have the system installed and working by the end of June 1984. While the process of conversion to a computerised system could hardly be concluded before the end of 1985, it is expected that significant improvements will be achieved in many facets of the operations of the Companies Office shortly after the system has become operational. It is expected that, by early 1986, most of the companies at present on the register will either have registered up-to-date returns or have been struck off the register.
