Vol. 347 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dublin Drug Problem.

225.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the drug problem that exists in flats (details supplied) in Dublin 2; and if he will outline the action he proposes to take to eliminate the problem as a matter of urgency.

I am aware that members of the Garda Drug Squad had a meeting recently with a member of the local residents association in the area to discuss the problem of drug abuse generally. He was assured that the Garda would continue to monitor closely the position to prevent any development of a major problem.

The Government are conscious of the serious drug problem currently prevailing in Dublin. This is why the Special Governmental Task Force on Drug Abuse was established. The Deputy will be aware that the task force made many recommendations, the implementation of which they believe is essential in the fight against drug abuse. These recommendations are in the areas of law enforcement, education, community and youth development, health and research.

I should like to assure the Deputy that some of these recommendations have already been implemented and that the Government are committed to implementing the recommendations at the earliest possible date.
