Vol. 347 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Corps of Engineers Vacancies.

9.

asked the Minister for Defence the number of vacancies that exist in the corps of engineers in the Curragh, Naas and Kildare; when he will fill these vacancies; and if he will retain the services of all civilian employees at present in these barracks.

The number of vacancies that exist in the Corps of Engineers at the Curragh is as follows: Curragh Camp — 29; Magee Barracks, Kildare — 3; Devoy Barracks, Naas — 2.

Four of the vacancies at the Curragh Camp are being filled. Consideration is being given to the filling of one other vacancy in the light of Government policy concerning restrictions on numbers employed in the public service.

It is not proposed to dispense with the services of any of the civilians on the regular maintenance staff at these locations. The filling of vacancies, as they arise, will be considered in the light of the policy in that regard current when the vacancies arise.

The services of nine temporary stokers, taken on on 1 November 1983 will be dispensed with in accordance with normal practice, at the end of the heating season.
