Vol. 348 No. 2

Written Answers. - Inner City Literacy Project.

375.

asked the Minister for the Environment the result of the inner-city literacy project which is funded by the inner-city group and administered by the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee with special reference to: (a) how the grant of £50,000 was allocated; (b) the number of adults trained as tutors; and (c) how many were from the city centre; and if he will give details of (d) the resource centre which was established and (e) the proposed follow-up.

A grant of £25,000 was allocated from the Dublin Inner City Group Fund to the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee in February 1982 to assist in the development of an inner city literacy programme. A further grant of £25,000 was allocated in March 1983 in respect of the continuation of the programme. The 1982 allocation was paid in full in December 1982 on the basis of a certificate from the VEC regarding the costs incurred in setting up the programme and a claim for recoupment of the expenditure incurred in 1983 has just been received.

The detailed information sought by the Deputy in regard to the project is not available at present but a full report is expected from the VEC within the next month. I will communicate with the Deputy when the information becomes available.
