Vol. 348 No. 10

Written Answers - Medical Research Expenditure.

351.

asked the Minister for Health the amount of money that was spent on medical research in 1983.

Medical research is carried out by or under the auspices of the following organisations:

1. The Medical Research Council of Ireland. In 1983 it spent £1,189,000 on medical research.

2. Hospitals. They carry out a variety of medical research as part of their on-going clinical work. There is, however, no specific financial provision made for this and there is, therefore, no information available on the amount spent on it.

3. Voluntary bodies. There are a number of voluntary bodies established for the purpose of helping victims of various diseases and also to raise funds for the purpose of seeking a cure for these diseases through medical research. There is no information on the amount spent on medical research in this manner.

4. The Medico-Social Research Board. This body carries out research of a medico-social nature and in 1983 it spent £780,000
