Vol. 348 No. 11

Social Welfare Bill, 1984: Order for Second Stage.

Bill entitled an Act to amend and extend the Social Welfare Acts, 1981 to 1983, and to provide that certain payments under those Acts shall be taken into account in assessing damages for personal injuries arising out of the use of a mechanically propelled vehicle being used in respect of which liability is required to be covered by an approved policy of insurance.

I move: "That the Second Stage be ordered for Wednesday, 14 March", subject to agreement with the Whips.

The programme for legislation has been raised a number of times by my colleagues on the Front Bench.

Is the order for Second Stage agreed?

It is subject to what I have to say now. We only heard about this Bill last Thursday and we agreed to take it because we understood it was subject to a deadline. It would be very helpful if we could have the programme for the session so that we would not find out about something on Thursday evening and have to agree to take it on the following Tuesday or Wednesday.

Question put and agreed to.
