The most recent published report of the inspector of mental hospitals was for the years 1977-79. There is not the same need for such reports as there was when the mental hospitals were closed institutions. However, the inspector of mental hospitals continues to inspect each district and private mental hospital as required by law. Reports on these inspections are furnished to me and appropriate action is taken by my Department. Much of the statistical information which would have been contained in the inspector's reports is published in the reports of the Medico Social Research Board.
