Vol. 349 No. 9

Written Answers. - School Building Inspectors.

asked the Minister for Education the number of school building inspectors in her Department for primary and second level schools.

There is no person designated as school building inspector on the staff of the Department. There is, however, a highly qualified professional staff who deal with all the various functions relating to the building and extension of second level schools i.e. architects, quantity surveyors, mechanical and electrical engineers, educationists and furniture and equipment officers totalling 15 in all.

In so far as national schools are concerned, inspectors of my Department work in conjunction with the professional staff of the Office of Public Works. The Deputy will be aware that I announced in the Programme for Action 1984-87 that responsibility for national school building will be transferred from that office to my Department's building unit.
